Bonnie graduated with a B.A. degree in English, Magna Cum Laude, from Carroll College in Waukesha, WI. She earned an M.A. degree in English Literature from University of Wisconsin.
Bonnie had an important and impactful career working in the non-profit sector. Her longest position was as Associate Executive Director of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, where she worked for 18 years, managing fund-raising events and volunteer programs. Upon leaving CF, she served as the Executive Director of other non-profits, including Childkind (an organization that empowers families caring for children with special needs) and the Georgia Transplant Foundation. She spent her life making a difference in the lives of people that were vulnerable and had medical hardships.
One of Bonnie’s favorite pastimes was gardening. She was so interested in plants that she took a Master Gardeners’ course and passed an extensive and difficult exam to become a Master Gardener. She then spent many hours volunteering at Woodlands Garden and as a member of Avondale Estates Garden Club, both near her home in Decatur. This activity gave her great joy and won her many new friends and admirers.
Bonnie is survived by her husband Charles (Charlie) M. Phelps of Decatur, GA; daughter Erin Bradley Haven and husband Mark Haven of Atlanta; stepdaughters Claire Phelps Barber of Pittsboro, NC (husband Alan Barber) and Katharine (Kate) Phelps Caparisos of Savannah, GA; Kate and Niko Caparisos’s daughters Ella Sophia and Magdaline Bea; stepson Charles (Ben) B. Phelps of Decatur, GA; Ben’s son Liam Benjamin and daughter Ava Elizabeth; and sisters Joyce Beilke O’Keane of Colgate, WI and Sue Beilke of Tigard, OR.
A celebration of her life will be held at the Hill Top Chapel within Honey Creek Woodlands natural burial grounds at 1:00 October 3, 2020. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, only family will attend the ceremony. Following the celebration there will be a procession to her resting place. The burial service will be conducted by Pastor Jimmy Jones.
