Dr. James Lee Guest, Jr. died of complications following a stroke after a full life of healing, music, travel and faith on December 10, 2017 at the age of 86.

Born September 28, 1931 in Compton, CA, as an only child of a father who served in the Navy, Dr. Guest lived his childhood in various locations around the globe, graduating from high school in Atlanta, GA at age 15 in 1946. He attended Emory University and went on to complete his medical degree at the Emory School of Medicine.

His surgical residency was completed at Vanderbilt University and was followed by two years of active duty in the US Army Medical Corp. His cardiothoracic residency was completed at the Medical College of Georgia in 1962 and from there he went on to serve on the faculty at the University of Florida School of Medicine. Eventually, he and his family settled in Montgomery, Alabama, where he started a private practice as a cardiovascular and thoracic surgeon from 1965 to 2000. He was one of the first doctors to bring open-heart surgery to Montgomery.

Upon retiring from his private medical practice, Dr. Guest worked in the Alabama prison system and the Veterans Administration Hospital.

In his work, his skilled hands performed chest and vascular surgeries that could heal. In his leisure, his hands were skilled at the piano keys and at the slides of his trombone. An avid reader, Dr. Guest was a lifelong learner, challenging himself to acquire knowledge and skill regarding everything from learning to fly, to studying various languages, to producing his own "Piano Stylings by Jim Guest" CDs at the age of 83.

He was passionate about travel. His deep Catholic faith led him on several pilgrimages throughout the world. Late in life, he became a self-taught artist producing more than 500 art pieces which became yet another way for him to follow his passions of discovery, growth and giving.

Dr. Guest is survived by his wife, Patricia Trawick Guest, as well as many children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services for Dr. Guest include a Rosary at 4:30pm on Friday, December 15, 2017, followed by a Funeral Mass at 5pm, both held at St. Bede the Venerable Catholic Church, 3870 Atlanta Highway, Montgomery, AL 36109. The celebrants will be Father Alex Valladares and Father Michael Sreboth.
