Father of Kay Lynn. Half-brother to Richard "Ricky" Abshier.
Gary died peacefully at St. Mary's Hospital. A veteran of the Vietnam War, he spent time at his local VFW and serving at his church.
In 1966, he joined the Army and completed his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., before serving in Vietnam as a Private First Class in the 62nd Engineer Battalion until he was honorably discharged in 1968.
Gary was a hard worker, spending most of his career installing carpeting and flooring and was a member of the local carpenters union. He resided in Maplewood, and upon retirement, he enjoyed sitting on his porch talking with neighbors, going to the country to wade in the lake, and taking care of his fish in a pond he had made in his backyard.
On September 15, 2019, Gary was baptized at Crossroads Presbyterian Fellowship in Maplewood, where he had been attending for over a year. This was a special day for him, as he had been drawn by the grace of God to follow his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. He was dedicated to his church, volunteered with projects, attended worship service regularly, and was faithful in his small group and men's discipleship group. He continued to grow in his knowledge and faith, looking to care for others, and praying with joy for God's work in his life.
Memorial Service was held at Crossroads Presbyterian Fellowship, Maplewood, Mo.
