Johnny E. Chapman, 65, of West Asheville, NC, passed away after an extended illness early Sunday afternoon, August 4, 2019, at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, NC.

Mr. Chapman was born on Tuesday, September 22, 1953 in Buncombe County, NC to James “Red” Edward Chapman of Bethlehem, NC, and Mary Josephine (Haney) Chapman of Asheville, NC. In December of 1976 in South Carolina, he married his loving wife of 38 years, the former Joyce Lee Cummings, who died on May 7, 2015.

Johnny, as everyone affectionately knew him, was a graduate of Asheville High School and the owner and operator of Utility Boring Company for many years. He later became a truck driver where he kept the roads hot. He was a race car enthusiast and enjoyed his fishing. And finally, Johnny loved, and I mean loved, sweets of all kinds.

In addition to his parents, he leaves behind to cherish his memory his daughters, Revonda Kelly of Fletcher, NC, and Kay Ryder and her husband, Ken, of Broadway, NC. Other survivors include five grandchildren, Amber McFee and her fiancé, Mark, Tia Kelly, Shannon Boguess and her husband, A.J., David Ryder and Zack Ryder; two great-grandchildren, Jake and Jase; two sisters, Mary “Sissy” Warren and her husband, Philip, of Columbia, SC, and Jane West and her husband, Keith, of Fines Creek, NC; two brothers, Robert Chapman of Asheville, NC, and William Chapman of Michigan. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife, he is preceded in death by his beloved brother, James “Curly” Chapman, and a nephew, Matthew Valentine Chapman.

A celebration of Johnny’s life will be held at 7:30 pm Thursday evening, August 8, 2019 in the Shuler Funeral Home Chapel, 125 Orrs Camp Road, Hendersonville, NC, with Rev. Chris D. Willett officiating. The family will receive guests that evening from 5:00 to 7:15 pm in the chapel. Burial will be at 1:00 pm Friday at the Dennyville Baptist Church Cemetery in Ronda, NC, with Rev. Joel R. Riley officiating.
