French Army General. Born in Strassburg, he entered the artillery school at Metz in 1784. The following year, he was assigned as a lieutenant to the 2nd Regiment of Artillery of Besançon. He was reassigned to the 7th Horse Artillery, before being promoted to captain in August of 1792, when he fought at the siege of Anvers. In 1794, he was appointed the deputy director of artillery at Douai. After serving in Germany in 1797, he fought with the Army of the Rhine in 1799. In 1800, he earned recognition by bringing the artillery of the Army of Reserve over the Alps, and again by his command of the guns in the battle of Marengo. In 1803, he was appointed the chief of staff of artillery at Brest. He was promoted to general de brigade in July of 1806.. His most notable action, however, occurred at the Battle of Friedland , where he employed his so-called "caseshot attack" where his artillery opened fire on the Russian line at this near point blank range, inflicting thousands of casualties upon the Russians. Never before had artillery charged and fired at such close range, but the action proved so devastating that other officers used it in future despite receiving heavy casualties as well as inflicting them. For his actions he was made Commander of the Legion of Honor. He was promoted general of division by Napoleon in 1808, and was made a Baron of the Empire and a Knight of the Iron Crown. He took command of the artillery for the Army of Spain in early 1809, and served at Ocana. In October 1810, he commanded the French artillery at the siege of Cadiz. British naval gunboats, however, destroyed his position at St. Mary's killing him. Napoleon decreed that his heart be lodged in the Pantheon.
