John Mitchell Dale III, 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Mico, Texas, on Aug. 14, 2020, where he had been looking out over Medina Lake for the past 35 years with his wife Anne.
John was born June 15, 1928 in Tulsa, Oklahoma to John Mitchell Dale Jr. and Helen Bauer Dale.
Upon graduation from Fortier High School in New Orleans, Louisiana at the age of 17, he enlisted in the Navy. John was undergoing pilot training when the Second World War ended, and he was honorably discharged.
He then enrolled at Louisiana State University and graduated with a BS in chemical engineering.
While at LSU, John met Anne Bryan Bornman, whom he married on June 9, 1951.
After working for Phillips Petroleum in Pasadena, Texas and Bartlesville, Oklahoma for five years and having two sons, they moved to San Antonio, Texas, where John worked for Southwest Research Institute for the next 30 years.
During those years, John authored or co-authored 11 patents, wrote many technical articles and gave presentations all around the globe to busi ness and technical audiences.
In 1979, he was awarded by Industrial Research for his invention of Suphlex, considered by them as one of the 100 most important research developments of that year.
In 1962, John and Anne purchased acreage on Medina Lake (Mico), with the family spending weekends developing a second home, which became a fulltime residence upon John’s retirement in 1986.
His love of exercise and the physical exertions of life in the country allowed him to remain vibrant and active well into his 80s.
John is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Anne Dale, sons David Dale of Sugarland Texas (wife Nancy), Chris Dale of Fort Collins Colorado (wife Deb), grandchildren Aaron Christian Dale, Tyson Michael Dale, John David Dale and Carolyn Ann Dale McDonald, and great-grandchildren Wyatt and Jack McDonald.
Throughout his life, John exhibited an exuberance for witty exchange, good natured teasing and spirited discussion on many subjects. He loved sharing the out-of-doors and manual labor with his family through camping trips and construction projects.
The family would like to express our deepest gratitude to the caregivers and hospice staff that allowed him to pass at his beloved lake home with family present.
