DERRICK DUANE SMITH was born to Herbert Owen Smith, Sr. and Loneta Wilson Smith (deceased) on September 8, 1967 in Chicago, Illinois.
He confessed Christ as his Savior and became an active member of Calvary Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama.
He received his education at Vaughn Road Elementary (Montgomery, Alabama); St Joachim Elementary School (Chicago, Illinois); and Mendel Preparatory Catholic High School (Chicago, Illinois). He graduated from high school in June 1986. During his high school years in Chicago, he played football and became active in Karate where he received several trophies and his brown belt in Okinawan Shuri Ryu style at Just for Kicks Martial Arts University. Sensei John Venson, II was always proud of his effort and hard work when he was training. In August 1986, he attended college at Alabama State University in Montgomery, Alabama.
He joined the Army in 1991 where he was honorably discharged a year later. During his professional career, he worked with the Veteran Administration Hospital, Jackson Hospital, WSI/GE Plastic, Belks, JC Penny, and others to name a few. Later, he pursued his career in sales and became a licensed insurance agent with Liberty National Life Insurance Company and American General Life Insurance Company (AIG). He was also a Notary Public with the State of Alabama. Encouraged to be independent, he decided to open his own insurance company called Derrick D. Smith Insurance Agency. He also served as a three-term President of Brighton Area Homeowner Association in Montgomery, Alabama where he displayed his love for the people in the community. He was also a spokesman for the Alabama Kidney Foundation where he would travel to speak too many about his transplant kidney. He was aired on major news channels on television in Montgomery and Birmingham regarding his kidney transplant. In 2011, Derrick was diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that attacks your blood and bones. Here to, he talked with several cancer patients about his own experience and displayed his strength and courage to all that met him. He hid his pain behind his jokes. He never complained about his condition but encourage others, with a smile on his face, to fight and stay faithful to God.
He suffered his illnesses for many years, and it ended on July 15, 2020. The chains were broken, and God called him home.
