Wayne L. Adams, Sr., age 94, passed away at Guardian Angels Care Center in Elk River on July 3rd. Preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Adelia Adams; brother, Lyle Adams; sisters, Ruby Adams and Doris Gadow; and his beloved wife, Florence.

Survived by son, Wayne Adams Jr. (Mickey); by grandchildren Mark (Therese), Peter (Sue), and Paul (Leeann) Adams, Mary Jo (Scott) Brown, Rebecca (Jerry) Lien, and Molly (Mike) Chmielewski; by 11 great-grandchildren; and by many nieces and nephews.

Wayne was better known in many quarters by his nickname, "Friday." He earned that while attending Edison High School, when his brother-in-law picked him up every weekend to help out at his store in Brooklyn Center and referred to him as "My Man Friday." The nickname stuck.

When Friday met Florence, it was love at first sight. Despite the misgivings of both families, the Baptist boy and Catholic girl married in 1934 and remained devoted to each other for 69 years until her death in 2003.

During the difficult years of the Great Depression, Friday delivered fuel oil - when work was available. Volunteering to teach Red Cross first aid classes during World War II piqued his interest in science. This led to his applying for a job at the University of Minnesota, where he was hired in 1943 for a menial position washing test tubes in the Physiology Department. He worked his way up to be associate department head before his retirement in 1979. This former truck driver with just a high school education but a talent for administration and team building contributed greatly to the University's ground-breaking heart research during the 1950s and 1960s. Friday believed strongly in "casting your bread upon the waters." He gave freely of his wisdom and help to nieces, nephews, grandchildren, graduate students, and neighbors over the years.

Funeral service 1 pm Wednesday, July 6, 2005 at Gearty-Delmore Robbinsdale Chapel, 39th and West Broadway. Visitation Tuesday, July 5, 2005 from 5 pm to 8 pm and also one hour before the service. Interment Gethsemene Cemetery in New Hope. Bring your favorite "Friday" story to share.
