He began many of his conversations with "Hey, I've got a story for you" and then you were swept into one of the many tales of Lauren's life. Whether it was a military barracks in France or England or a sushi bar in Japan, you were certain to enjoy the telling and retelling. He loved the Groucho Marx quote, "If you've heard this story before, don't stop me, because I want to hear it again".

Lauren Leroy was born the youngest of five children to Earl and Etta Smith in San Joaquin, California. From an early age he never shied away from hard work. Whether helping on the family farm, operating a rock crusher in the construction of Shasta Dam, learning the medical technician responsibilities in the military, felling trees in the Shasta County forests or honing his skills in the construction trade, Lauren approached each task with enthusiasm and a can-do spirit.

His positive attitude and eagerness to explore took him to Japan to build custom homes, to Asia to vacation with family and to Europe to relive war memories. His building skill gave him the courage to boldly carve out the fellowship hall at the church and create a gym and administration building at the school.

Lauren will long be remembered for opening his home for game nights and family reunions. He enthusiastically led out in church responsibilities and Pathfinders. Whether singing in a Karaoke restaurant, wielding a hammer or boon-dogging on a snowmobile, we will never forget his strength and that boisterous voice that would fill a room.

His love of family and devotion to God carried him through his life and his passing has left an empty place in our hearts. We are lucky to be a part of Lauren's story.
