Ike, 92, passed away February 9, 2011 after a short term at White Oak Nursing Facility of Waxhaw, N.C.

He was a resident of Carolina Lakes Sun City, Fort Mill, S.C., and previously Pawley's Island, S.C., and Fulton, Md.

Ike, the son of Elizabeth J. Dunnington and Irwin I. Main, Sr., was born August 7, 1918 in Seat Pleasant, Md.

He was predeceased by his brother, Robert L. Main, and wife, Margaret, two sons, Alan J. Main and Gregory F. Main, and one grandson, Matthew J. Main.

Ike leaves behind his wife of 40 years, Nancy Curtis Main, and seven remaining children, Michael I. Main and wife Julie, Halcom E. Curtis and wife, Cindy, Mary M. Main, Angela M. Main, Kevin C. Main and wife, Wanda, Theresa J. Skinner and husband, Howard, Stephen G. Main and wife, Andrea; and daughter-in-law, Joy Main. He also leaves behind 24 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; one nephew, Patrick Main and wife, Sharon; and two great-nephews.

He will also be missed by his sister-in-law, Martha J. Schmidt, and brother and sister-in-law, Mitchell and Chris Curtis.

Ike graduated from Maryland Park High School at the age of 15 and then attended the University of Maryland to study Engineering.

He served his country during World War II as a communications officer, attaining the rank of major in the Army Air Corps (now the Army's 101st division). He was stationed in San Antonio, Texas, as well as in Japan at the end of the war.

He had a very successful 42 year career with Verizon, throughout the Maryland and Washington, D.C., area. He was responsible for the White House and Capitol communications during the term of Lyndon B. Johnson, traveling with the president on a State Visit to Mexico.

Upon retiring in 1980, Ike relocated to Pawley's Island. He remained active, serving on the board of the Mental Health Association; was a charter member of Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church, and charter member and past president of the Sea Gull Men's Golf Association. He was a member and director of the Grand Strand Grasshopper Golf group for 10 years.

Ike traveled extensively throughout his life visiting every continent except Antarctica. His favorites were cruises through The Panama Canal and Alaska, and traveling throughout Australia and New Zealand. His hobbies included genealogy, photography, multimedia presentations, golf, reading, writing, gardening, and acquiring greater computer skills.

He had a gentle spirit, always willing to serve friends, neighbors and even strangers. Ike enjoyed opening up his home to visitors, family and friends for fun times and fellowship.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011 at Precious Blood of Christ Catholic Church in Pawleys Island.

The family will receive friends one half hour prior to the service.
Entombment will follow in the church columbarium.

Memorials may be made to Hospice or your favorite charity.
