Michael Edward Mathews, 75, was born in Houston, Texas on January 8, 1945 and departed this world on Friday, September 18, 2020.

He is a lifelong resident of Houston, Texas where he graduated from John H. Reagan High School, class of ‘62-‘63. He later graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. He taught for many years at J. Will Jones Elementary in Houston. The majority of his career was as a retail manager for different companies in Houston for 40 years. He spent 17 years as a manager for Craigs Stores and Everitt-Buelow Clothiers of Houston. He spent several years managing for T.J. Maxx. He was an optometry store manager for almost 20 years and retired from Luxottica, Inc. after managing both their Lenscrafters and Sears Optical stores in Houston. Michael received many awards and rewards for his achievements in the optical field of Luxottica.

He was an active member of Way of Life United Pentecostal Church of Houston, and a former member of Irvington Pentecostal Church of Houston where he was a choir member. At Way of Life, he was a Sunday School teacher and prayer warrior who touched many lives through his faith.

Michael is survived by his wife of 52 years, Diane Taylor Mathews; his son, Randolph Taylor (Randy) Mathews, and his twin daughters, Ashley Elizabeth Mathews and Amanda Marie Mathews, all of Houston; nieces, Cassie Huse Tarantino of California and Allison J. Taylor of Katy, Texas; as well as many cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest Edward Mathews and Elizabeth L. Baker Mathews; older sister, Sandra Ruth Huse of California and Ginger E. Taylor and her husband Clayton B. Taylor and their daughter, Sarah Kate Taylor, all of Katy, Texas; in-laws, Thomas G. Taylor and wife Tommye M. Taylor and their youngest daughter, Maribess Taylor, all of Houston.

Flowers may be sent to Woodlawn Funeral Home, 1101 Antoine Dr. Houston, Texas 77055. The funeral will be held here, Friday, September 25, 2020 at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Parkinson Disease Association (APDA), 135 Parkinson Avenue, Staten Island, New York 10305.
