Donald was a 22-year veteran of both the Army and Air Force. He participated in the invasion of D-Day in France and the Battle of the Bulge. After retiring from service in 1964, he went on to become a writer, biographer, and author of military history for military history websites and veterans newsletters. He co-authored the biography of his World War II commander, Major General Maurice Rose, with Steven L Ossad, published in 2003.

He was survived by his 3 children, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, four brothers, and 2 sisters.
