Carl, 71, of Fairgrove, MI. passed away on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at Covenant Health Care – Cooper in Saginaw. Carl was the son of the late Leon & Anna (Fletcher) Childs. He passed away as the result of an accident associated with what he loved – farming. Carl was
the son of the late Leon and Anna (Fletcher) Childs.

A graduate of Akron-Fairgrove schools, Carl married Cathy Van Petten on July 27, 1968 at the Fairgrove Presbyterian Church, where he was a member. Besides being a loving husband, father and grandfather, Carl was deeply involved in his community and had the desire to make life better for those around him. Carl was involved in many organizations over the years and held every role from community volunteer to high ranking official. As a planner and visionary, he made an impact on the organizations and positions that he was involved in including Fairgrove Village Councilman and President, Michigan Bean Festival Committee and Chairman, board member of the Fairgrove Township Zoning Board, board member of the Tuscola Firefighter’s Association, Fairgrove Fire and Rescue, setting up the ambulance service for Akron and Fairgrove, chairman of the Lagoon Committee, Planning Commission for Tuscola County and Fairgrove Township, special advisor for the windmills, current Village President, and many more. Carl was the first of three generations to serve on the fire department with his son, Chris, and grandson, Chanc. He served for over forty-five years on the Fairgrove Fire Department where he was Fire Chief twice.. His thumbprint in the community will be visible for many years to come as he was instrumental in the construction of many buildings in the area. You couldn’t drive a mile down the road without him pointing out what building he repaired or built as a licensed contractor including the Fire Hall and DPW Building. He was self-employed and was affectionately known as “Boss Man Childs.”

Although active in the community, Carl loved his family and always made time to be at any family function. His favorite duties involved being a husband, father, and grandfather. He made a lasting impact with his question of the day to his grandchildren, “Do you want a kick in the pants?” He had the ability to teach others without even trying and had several nicknames including “Guru” and “Sensei.” He analyzed things and always found a better way. Carl willingly and selflessly shared his experience, knowledge, and skills to all who knew him.

Carl is survived by his loving wife of fifty-two years, Cathy; three children and their spouses and five grandchildren, Carol & Aaron Fletcher, Sr. of Rochester and their children, Simone and Aaron Jr., Carren Englehart (Joe Oszut) of Fairgrove and her children, Zachary & Abbey Englehart and Brennan (Taylor) Englehart, and Christopher & Amy Childs of Caro and their son, Chanc (Ashlyn) Childs; three siblings and their spouses, Neil & Lynda Childs of Horton, Mary & Mark Lewis of Unionville, and Dean & Susan Childs of Tipp City, Ohio; as well as many nieces and nephews.

In keeping with Carl’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, October 4, 2020 at Mulberry Park, West Center Street (across from Fairgrove United Methodist Church). The family will be present to receive friends until the time of service. Burial will be in Brookside Cemetery in Fairgrove at a later date.

Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider memorials to the Carl Childs Discretionary Fund, c/o Cathy Childs, 205 West Sherman Street, Caro, MI Plans are being finalized to honor Carl and continue to help others in the community. If asked to describe a volunteer, you would say Carl Childs. Beyond his life, Carl continued to help others through donation of his soft brown eyes so that another may see. “That’s what he always did!” He will be remembered for his loyalty, dedication, service, and sacrifice.
