E.B. Potts was the son of I.J. & Mary Jane (Bryson) Potts.

He was born in Dover, a small village just west of Powhatan in the Captina Valley in Ohio. In his early life he was in the mercantile business in Belmont County, Ohio and later became very successful in steamboats and river floating stores. In the late 1880's he opened the E.B. Potts grocery store that occupied the entire ground floor of the Hawley Building in Wheeling, WV.
He later became interested the in hotel business being associated first in the erection of the Grand Central hotel which he managed for years and moved his grocery store to the first floor. He later remodeled the building at Tenth & Main streets and erected an addition, forming the Hotel Wheeling.
He moved to Miami, Florida eight years before his death.

His son, Edwin Bruce, Jr., continued in the family business and was the Manager, Wheeling Hotel, when he died on 6 Oct 1950.
