"Cousin Jake had quite an affinity for grandma & grandpa Ammerman. After his parents died, he came to live with his favorite namesake cousin. Cousin Jake had a room up stairs over the parlor furnished with his three-quarter poplar bed and whatever else he brought from home. The younger girls, Mary, Louise & Frances delighted in playing in Cousin Jake's room, particularly in the middle of his bed. He was a very meticulous man; and so far as he was concerned, his room was off limits to the youngsters.
He was stone deaf and could not utter an audible word. Being slightly crippled, he walked with a cane rather hard to the thin carpeted floors, making more noise than he was aware. Accoridng to the tale, he always was seen with his cane and never without it.
On one occasion, when the Ammerman girls were having their afternoon frolic in Cousin Jake's room, he played a trick on them. He always knew when they had been in the middle of his bed--it was never made up quite like he left it. On this particular afternoon, he slipped up the stairs unbeknown to the trio. Upon entering his room, he found everything topsy turvy including the old old popular bed with the girls in the middle of it. With extra hard stomping of his cane and ghost-like utterances, there were never more scared youngsters--for Cousin Jake flailed them all with his cane and sent them scurrying down the stairs, pigtails and petticoats flying, never to return to play in the middle of his bed."
