Online research provides that he was the first of nine children born to Adeline Chandler and Ebenezer Jennison. As confirmed by U.S. Government Pension files, he married Cordelia Krantz Orcott on 21 Jan 1844 in Piscataquis County, Maine. Seven known children were born of that marriage: Alzeda M. (ABT 1845-unk ), Melvina E.(1847-1912), Frances E. (1850-1882), Emma (1855-unk), Eben (1857-1869), Cora (1859-unk) and Amelia (1862-unk).

On 17 Jul 1862 at Foxcroft, Maine, John C. Jennison was enrolled in Company B, 20 Regiment of the Maine Volunteers. On 29 Aug 1862 at Portland, Maine, he was mustered into that same unit as a First Sergeant, to serve a period of 3 years.

The Regiment moved south and was assigned to the Army of the Potomac. It was involved in peripheral skirmishes at Antietam and Fredericksburg. The Regiment then moved north to reinforce U.S. forces at Gettysburg. The Regiment gained renown for its decisive battle at Little Round Top. Apparently, Sergeant Jennison became ill and was hospital when the unit was moving north towards Gettysburg. Military reports reflect that he died of acute chronic diarrhea at Finley General Hospital (aka Camp Sprague).
