Vola Hutson Stewart was a loving mother to 14 children, 30 grandchildren, and 19 great grand children.

She was the daughter of Floyd and Lucy Woolum Hutson.

Among her life accomplishments was having each of her children become successful adults. Six of her sons served in the military and one son, Stanley, achieved the rank of Lt. Colonel before retiring from the army in 2006. Vola's husband, the late Basil Stewart, was a coal miner before changing careers and becoming a master plumber. He was a long term member of the Bell county Masonic Lodge # 691. Basil worked for Harlan Plumbing and Heating Company and supervised building projects at the Pineville Hospital, Pine Mountain Lodge, the Knox County Court House, Union College and Eastern Kentucky University. He preceded her in death in 1964.

Vola attended Bell County High School along with her brothers Victor and Walter. In order to attend high school, she and her brothers had to walk a distance of four miles to catch a train into Pineville. They would then transfer to a bus that would take them to the school. Their grandfather, Palestine Walker Woolum, was the first Bell County School Superintendent of the newly formed Bell County in the early 1900?s. A deeply spiritual and religious lady, Vola was known for her heart felt and lengthy prayers. Her young grandchildren would pray, that someone other than Me Ma, would be saying the grace before each meal. She once said that her favorite hymnal was Sweet Hour of Prayer. Her faith in God was never doubted by her family. She was known for reading her Bible, listening to old time Southern Gospel songs, tithing to her church and stating often that our Lord Jesus Christ was our Savior! Vola was also known for her unique wit and keen sense of humor. She would exhibit this humor even during times when she was correcting one of her children. Her son Jerry recalls a time when his mom found it necessary to disciple him. She called out to him loudly, "Boy, do you know what's wrong with YOU?"\ Your head is too flat" . . .(as she emphatically rubbed her knuckles across her other open palm), "You need a few knots on it!"

Vola lived her last four years in the Middlesboro Heath Care Center on New Wilson Road. Her family extends their sincere gratitude for the amazing loving care that she received from each one. She received an abundance of love from everyone including Phyllis, Juanita and Diane.

Vola is survived by her children, Joyce Ann Argabrite, Lee Roy Stewart, Glenda Friebel, Martha (Marty)Elliott, Etta Faye Schmieder, Lester G. Stewart, Geneva (Jackie) Moody, Leland E. Stewart, Jerry D.(Jeb) Stewart, Jack Stewart, Caroline Stasiewicz, Stanley Stewart, Doyle Ray Stewart, and Bryan Stewart. She is also survived by her beloved step brother Eugene Woolum and his family of Arjay, Kentucky.

Throughout her long struggle with Parkinson's disease, her family was devoted to her. Everyone including her sons in laws, daughters in law, and grandchildren took the time to go out of their way to help her through this illness. Vola was so blessed to have them in her life. She would want them to know that she will someday meet them again in her new home in Heaven. And in her words of prayer, "May the circle be unbroken."
