After his graduation from Chicago Vocational High School (CVS) he enlisted into the United States Army in 1953. During Dan's military career he served two tours in Vietnam, the first was in 1967 with the 4th Infantry Division and the 2nd tour in 1970 with the 1st Cavalry. Among his military awards were the Bronze Star, 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the Air Medal with 4 Oak Leaf Clusters. His military service included many assignments in Germany (Bad Kreuznach, Giessen, Hanau, Oberammergau), Vietnam, and Ft. Carson, Colorado.
While serving in Bad Kreuznack, Germany he met and married the love of his life, Eva Fuhrmann, in 1956. Together they started a family and were blessed with 8 children. After 21 years in the Army, he retired in 1974 where he owned and operated an Exxon service station. Dan moved to Saudi Arabia for 10 years where he worked for Vinnell Corp providing military training, logistics and support. Once home he dedicated his final years of service to Ft. Carson's Facility Engineers. Dan and Eva were active members of the Colorado Springs Germania Club since 1974.
Dan had a deep love for his family, friends and country. Growing up in Chicago he was loyal to his favorite team- the Chicago Bears, White Sox, and Cubs. Colorado became home and he found his love for the Denver Broncos. Dan could move and groove to any beat especially when it came to the Jitterbug, Polka, or the Chicken Dance. He was a gentle soul with unending kindness that would make anyone feel as though they were his favorite person in the world.
Dan will be greatly missed by those that loved him.
Dan was preceded in death by his parents, his brother William, his sister Gail, and his son-in-law Donald Dukart.
