Obituary for Norma Smothers
Norma Lee Smothers, 91, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on September 19, 2020 at Parkview Manor in Wellman. She was born November 19, 1928 in Davis County, Iowa to Dewey and Nellie Rose Latta Small. She married M. LaVerne Smothers on October 8, 1945 in Lancaster, Missouri. He passed away on November 25, 1985.
Norma worked at the Modern Shop and P.S. Notions on the Bloomfield Square for many years. She was a volunteer for Brownies and Girl Scouts. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, playing cards, bowling, and spending time with her family. Her great-grandchildren were her pride and joy. She also greatly enjoyed playing the board game, Aggravation, with her husband, aunt, and uncle. While living in Bloomfield, she attended the Savannah Christian Church, First Baptist Church, and later the Bloomfield Christian Church.
She is survived by her daughter, LaVerna (William) Nickell of Wellman; two grandchildren, Lisa (Jeffrey) Cole of Monrovia, Maryland, James (Candra) Nickell of Wellman; five great-grandchildren, Lauren, Megan, and Timothy Cole, Collin and Carly Nickell; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Bobby and Dewey “Bud” Small; three sisters, Maurine Forsythe, Shirley Smith, Lucille Cope; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with Pastor Tim Frasher officiating. No visitation is planned. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to the American Foundation for the Blind and the Bloomfield Christian Church.
