Thomas Russel Ramsey was born on March 27, 1949 in Vinita, OK to John T. Jr. and Larue (Cooper) Ramsey. He departed this life on September 19, 2020 in Tulsa, OK. Russel was raised in ranching families around Craig County. He was brought up to work cattle, ride horses and rope. He was baptized at the Bunker Hill Baptist Church in 1958. The family moved to Pryor when he was young and his dad took a job with GRDA. He attended school in Pryor until the sixth grade and later Adair when the family bought a farm northwest of Adair. He graduated from Adair and attended college at NEO A&M in Miami and Northeastern State in Tahlequah.
He married Linda Galyean on June 6, 1969 at the First Baptist Church in Vinita. They had celebrated over 51 years of marriage at his passing, and they had lived their entire married life in the Adair Community. In 1970 Russel went to work for GRDA at the steam plant in OOWA Park in Pryor, he moved to the Kerr Dam facility in the maintenance department in 1983. He retired as Kerr Dam Maintenance Supervisor in August of 2011.
At an early age Russel became involved with showing cattle and later horses. He was a lifetime member of the American Hereford Association and the American Quarter Horse Association. He served on the Oklahoma Hereford Board of Directors and also on the Mayes County Fair Board. He was still actively involved in breeding Hereford Cattle and Quarter Horses. In over sixty years he had only missed attending the Mayes County Fair twice due to health issues.
He is survived by his wife Linda of the home, brother Johnnie Ramsey and wife Gala of Adair, sister Sharon Troyer and husband Dennis of Adair, daughter in-law, Jacinda Ramsey of Pryor, grandchildren, Sam Watson and Sarah Watson Garrison of Pryor, brothers in-law Sid Galyean and wife Beverly of Greenville, TX and Bill Galyean and Sharon Hairgrove of Claremore. A special aunt, Thelma Guthrie of Vinita, his oldest and dearest friend Charlie VonSchriltz of Adair, numerous nieces, nephews, great nephews who he dearly loved and cherished.
Russel was preceded in death by a son Gregory Scott Ramsey, his parents, John and Larue Ramsey, mother and father in-law Sid and Inez Galyean, his grandparents, John T. Ramsey Sr., Anna Ray Thompson and Tom and Ollie Cooper.
The casket bearers will be, Chris Canida, D. J. Troyer, Reggie Ramsey, Ronnie Kemp, Larry Ramsey, and Roy Ramsey. Honorary Bearers will be Charlie VonSchriltz, Tom Trundle, Leon Stipe, Dr. Steven Dill and Dr. Chell Propp.
The family will receive friends at the Stephens-Key Chapel in Pryor from 6-8 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2020.
The Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, September 24, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Mayes County Event Center, with Tommy Parker and Jerald Freeman officiating.
