Reverend Cathy Cain Hale, 70, died Saturday morning, September 19, 2020 at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System after a long battle with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
Cathy was born and raised in Morristown and was the daughter of the late William Kenner Cain and Bobby Anne Mitchell Cain. She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church and enjoyed teaching Sunday School at all age levels. She loved the outdoors and spent many summers on the farm with her family. She was an avid sports fan and was truly an original “Vol for Life.” Always the student, she graduated from Morristown High School in 1967 and continued her education at the University of Tennessee earning a Master’s degree in Public Health. She became Director of Education and Family planning for the Buncombe County Health Department in Asheville, North Carolina. She later served in the same capacity for the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Health Department. She then served on the faculty at the University of Tennessee as Field Coordinator for the division of Health and Safety.
In 1979, she returned to Morristown as Director of Education and Community Outreach at Morristown-Hamblen Hospital. While serving as director, Cathy was very active in the Lakeway Area civic community, working with ALPS, the Hamblen County American Cancer Society, Chamber of Commerce, Girls Inc., United Way, and the Hamblen County American Red Cross. She was also on the adjunct faculty at Walters State Community College. For her leadership in the community, Cathy was named First Lady of Morristown by the Beta Sigma Phi for 1990.
Cathy left Morristown to attend seminary at Drew Theological University in Madison, New Jersey in 2000. Immediately after her graduation, Cathy was appointed by the Holston Annual Conference to Colonial Heights United Methodist Church in Kingsport as Associate Pastor. After receiving her Elder orders in 2004, she was appointed as Senior Pastor at Auburn United Methodist Church in Riner, Virginia. Her last full-time appointment was at Wears Valley United Methodist Church in Sevier County. Cathy also mentored and encouraged men and women in their call to ministry by serving on the Holston Conference Committee on Ordained Ministry.
Cathy retired from full-time itinerant ministry in 2015. However, she continued to serve God and the church as interim pastor at First United Methodist Church in Pennington Gap, Virginia and later at Oakland United Methodist Church in Jefferson City, Tennessee. She continued to serve on the Mountain View District Committee on Ordained Ministry until her death.
During her lifetime, Cathy “wore many hats” and achieved many titles, but her favorite title was being her grandson Noah’s “Nana.”
Survivors include her son, J. W. (Amanda) Hale; sister, Patti Cain (John) Allen; and grandson, Noah Cameron Hale, all of Morristown; nephew, Robert (Leigh Ann) Allen; nieces, Margaret (John) Parker, Christy (Karl) Pound and Jamie Ngoupa.
Due to COVID-19, a private graveside service will be held at Liberty Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with Reverends Mike Cutshaw and Darris K. Doyal officiating.
