Carmen was born Maria Irma Carmen Blea in Las Vegas, N.M. in 1930. Her ancestors were descendants of Spaniards who settled the area that would ultimately become New Mexico - first New Spain, then Mexico and ultimately the United States. She was fiercely proud of her heritage and Spanish was her first language. About the time she began elementary school her parents moved to Denver and she quickly had to learn English. She spent her lifetime in Denver ever devoted to her Mother and three sisters, Frances, Pauline, Barbara, and their families.

Carmen married Andrew Ward just after finishing high school. They raised nine children . Shoes were shined, hair was combed, Sunday mass was in order and always many, many meals on the table. She often worked part-time jobs in order to help provide for her family. Most memorable to her family was her employment at Russell Stover Candies in downtown Denver. She began a full-time customer service career with Citicorp just about the time the youngest two children entered grade school. She retired from Citicorp and was extremely proud of her professional accomplishments which included many awards and national recognition. She and Andy were able to enjoy many years in retirement which included travel and their love of sports, especially Colorado's professional teams. She remained actively aware of national, state and local politics.

Carmen is preceded in death by her husband Andrew, sons Gary and Stephen, granddaughter Laurie and grandson Patrick. They are part of the communion of saints who welcomed her into heaven along with her mother and so many dear relatives whom she loved so much.
