Lewis Henry Hart was born June 25, 1921 in Moscow, Latah County, Idaho. He was the fourth of six children born to Everard Washington Hart (1881 – 1972) and Anna Belle "Annie" (Cooper) Hart (1892 – 1978): Walter E. Hart (1912 – 1987), Albert Merrill Hart (1913 – 2003), Hazel A. Hart (1919 – 1927), Lewis H. Hart, Elmer E. Hart (1923 – 2019) and Floyd L. Hart (1930 – 1997). He was raised on a farm his paternal great grandfather, Nelson Hart (1840 – 1925), had homesteaded in 1891 about six miles northeast of Moscow, Idaho. Growing up in the depression years meant the children all helped out when they were old enough—there was always work to be done on the farm. Lewis and his siblings attended Evergreen School, a one-room country school, within walking distance of their home, grades one through eight. After completing the eighth grade, Lewis attended Yakima Valley Academy in Granger, Washington. He contracted polio in August 1937 and had to drop out of school for a year, but returned to graduate in 1938. He held the office of class Treasurer his Junior year and his Senior Year. He enrolled in Walla Walla College that fall. While attending Walla Walla College, he met his bride-to-be, Ruth Swanson. After graduating in May, 1942, they married August 20, 1942 in her hometown of Fallon, Nevada. They spent the first two years of married life at Campion Academy in Loveland, Colorado where he taught science and math. Lewis then decided to return to school taking medicine at Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, California where he graduated in 1948. After graduation Lewis moved to Spokane, Washington where he completed a year of internship at Deaconess Hospital in 1949. He then went to Rockford, Washington where he established a general practice for a few years. In 1952 Lewis moved his family to San Antonio, Texas where he went through basic training in the Air Force. After completion, Lewis moved his family to Massachusetts where he served at Laurance G. Hanscom Field, Bedford, Massachusetts. He returned to the west Coast in 1956 and went into family practice in Troy, Idaho. September 9, 1958 Dr. Lewis Hart was elected president of the Latah County Medical Association. In 1962 he and Ruth moved to Roseburg, Oregon and he practiced there before spending several years practicing medicine abroad. First in Ecuador then in Jamaica. After returning to the states, Lewis completed a residency in anesthesia at Loma Linda University before going to Malawi, Africa for three years. During his time there, he flew the mission plane out to the remote villages treating the people there who needed medical care. Upon his return to the States, he joined the Department of Anesthesiology at Loma Linda University Medical Center and worked there until he retired. In his retirement years, he and Ruth moved back to Roseburg, Oregon where they enjoyed life in the country. Gardening and church activities kept them busy. Lewis particularly enjoyed spending time on the Ham radio talking to people all over the world. On August 15, 1992, Lewis and Ruth celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary at reception in Roseburg, Oregon hosted by their children and grandchildren. In later life, they returned to Loma Linda, California to be close to family. Lewis died there December 18, 2014. Ruth (Swanson) Hart born April 9, 1921, died May 15, 2018. They are buried together in Montecito Memorial Park, Colton, California. Written by Janie Hart, niece
