James "Jim" Michael Mackey, 73, of Le Mars, Iowa, passed away Thursday, September 17, 2020 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.

Visitation with the family present will be from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 23, 2020 at the Le Mars Church of Christ. Social distancing and wearing a mask are required. Interment will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 25, 2020 at the Omaha National Cemetery, 14250 Schram Road, Omaha, Nebraska. Arrangements are with the Rexwinkel Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa.

James Michael Mackey was born October 8, 1946 in Akron, Iowa, the son of Francis and Frances (Scott) Mackey. He attended school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School in 1964.

Following graduation, he began his over 20-year career with the United States Military. He joined the Iowa Army National Guard and shortly thereafter enlisted in the United States Army where he served for 3 years. While in the Army, he was stationed overseas in Santo Domingo during the Dominican Conflict. Following his honorable discharge for the United States Army, he returned to the Iowa Army National Guard and worked fulltime for 14 years. Following retirement from Guard, he joined the Army Reserves and retired in 2006.

He was united in marriage to Randi L. Moore on January 14, 1967 in Akron, Iowa. They lived in Fort Riley, Kansas for a short time and later moved to Sioux City. In 1979, they moved to Denison, Iowa, where he was working fulltime for the Guard. In 1991, they moved to Le Mars and Jim went to work for Wells Dairy. Later he went to work fulltime for Do It Best Hardware in Sioux City. Most recently, he was working part time at Hardware Hank in Le Mars.

Jim was a member of the Le Mars Church of Christ where he served as an elder for many years. He was also a member of the American Legion. He enjoyed reading, watching action movies, doing yardwork, going to the Y.M.C.A., and playing cribbage. He was a die-hard Iowa Hawkeye fan as well. He also enjoyed listening to country music, especially Alabama and having coffee with his buddies. He will be remembered for great “hugs” he would give to his family.

Survivors include his wife, Randi of Le Mars, IA; 4 children: Ann Mackey of Tulsa, OK, Richard F. (Brian Fox) Mackey of Omaha, NE, Sara (Richard) Blackburn of Boys Town, NE, and Michael (Sri) Mackey of Le Mars, IA; 7 grandchildren: Hibiki Kitilach, Tyaugska Kitilach, Melfeena Kitilach, Hannah Blackburn, Judah Blackburn, Lasanna Mackey, and Matthias Mackey; his siblings: Ronald (Sandi) Mackey of Arizona, Julie Moriston of Sioux City, IA, Cindy (Jerry) Osterholdt of Onawa, IA, and Steve (Teri) Mackey of Sioux City, IA; his in laws: Cora Mackey of Akron, IA, Judy Lines-McFadden of Battle Creek, MI, and Peter (Linda) Moore of Tucson, AZ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his father and mother in law: Richard and Dorothy Moore; and his siblings: Douglas Mackey and Kathy Nichols.
