Obituary from flammfh.com:
Matthew William Bird, 87, of Teton, Idaho, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2020 from natural causes.
Matt was born on September 12, 1933 in St. Anthony, the 3rd and youngest child of Tilmon Berry Bird and Maud Evelyn Harris Bird. He grew up in Teton where he attended elementary school and graduated from South Fremont High School in St. Anthony. On April 25, 1952, he married his high school sweetheart, Veda Richards, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. She preceded him in death on August 11, 1999.
Matt was drafted into the US Army in 1954. Following basic training in California and Texas, he spent 18 months stationed in Germany. Upon returning home from military service, he and Veda made their home in St. Anthony and Teton where they raised their family.
Matt worked as an auto mechanic for Parker and Stones in St. Anthony for 16 years. He then worked with a brother-in-law, reconditioning government rotary snowplows in Paul, Idaho for 2 years. It was at this time he had a desire to go back to his roots in Teton where he and Veda built a home on the Bird homestead. He worked for Madison School District as a mechanic in the transportation department for 23 years, until his retirement in 1997. Matt was an excellent mechanic and took much pride in what he did and satisfaction in a hard day’s work.
He was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in the Rexburg temple and enjoyed the association of the people there. He loved the gospel of Jesus Christ and served faithfully in various callings throughout his life.
Matt liked nature and being outdoors. He enjoyed camping, picnics, fishing, swimming, riding motorcycles and going for drives to see the scenery. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was happiest spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved and welcomed each one and was always concerned for their welfare and what was going on in their lives. He will be greatly missed.
Survivors include two sons, Clinton (Linda) Bird of St. Anthony, Bryant Bird of Teton, one daughter, Holly (Robert) Schley of Rigby, 8 grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Veda, brother, Tim, and sister, Harriet.
There will be a viewing Monday, September 21 from 7-8pm at Bert Flamm Mortuary in St. Anthony. Funeral Services will be held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saint in Teton on Tuesday, September 22, at 11 am with a viewing from 10-10:45 that morning. Social distancing and masks are encouraged. Burial will be in the Teton/ Newdale Cemetery with military rites.
