Sergeant James Kingsley is described as a member of His Majesty's 44th Regiment. This is likely to have been the 44th (East Essex) Regiment of Foot which embarked for India in 1822 and was deployed to Burma for service in the First Anglo-Burmese War in early 1825. It formed part of an army which advanced up the River Irrawaddy to the Kingdom of Ava and then, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John Shelton, captured the city of Arakan in March 1825. After suffering many casualties from fever, the regiment was withdrawn and returned to India in 1826.

James seems to have married twice.

Henry Louther Kingsley married Ellen Byrne on 12 December 1849 in Deesa, Bombay, India. Ellen was born about 1832 and her father's name was James Byrne. Henry enlisted in about 1843 holding positions as Sergeant and Major in a Royal Regiment of Mounted Artillery and was discharged in 1862.
