Marguerite Esther Bruce was born at home in Pitcher Township in Cherokee County on December 2, 1920 to Earl and Ethel (Souther) Bruce. "Grete" joined brothers Cliff, Robert and Kenneth and sister, Viola as the youngest sibling. She grew up on the farm during the depression years when things were a struggle but togetherness was their strength. She graduated from Aurelia High School in 1938.

Marguerite married Paul Lindgren in Marcus, Iowa on December 17, 1940. They made their first home near Fielding, Iowa and a couple of years later moved south of Cleghorn where three girls were born; Janet, Anita and Elaine. She was always busy on the farm with gardening, canning, housekeeping and being a support to her husband. They farmed there for about 17 years until Paul’s untimely death on October 15, 1959.

Marguerite and her three girls moved to Cherokee in March of 1960 and made their home on Ash Street. She began working outside of the home in 1961 at Noble Insurance Agency where she met Gunnar Osterling who also sold insurance and real estate. They were married on May 28, 1969. She then worked for Production Credit Association for many years until her retirement at age 66. Farming and the farm community was a part of her life always.

She and Gunnar enjoyed traveling, ballroom dancing and their involvement in Serpaci Car Club, Eastern Star and Shriner’s organizations as well as their “steak fry” bunch. Marguerite loved the fair and attended the Spencer Fair and Cherokee County Fair religiously and won a Blue Ribbon for the “Chicken Scratch” pillow in retirement years. She was always fortunate to have her siblings, children and grandchildren close by to enjoy life’s events.

Gunnar passed away on May 19, 2002. She lived in the house they built on West Cherry Street in Cherokee until moving to an apartment at the Beck in Cherokee. She then moved to the Gardens Assisting Living and ultimately to Cherokee Specialty Care where she passed away early in the morning of September 18, 2020.

Marguerite was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Cherokee, Iowa most of her adult life. Her faith was always an important part of her life and she participated in activities related to her church family including being a bell ringer for many years.

Loved ones who passed away before her include her husbands, Paul (1959) and Gunnar (2002) as well as her parents Earl and Ethel Bruce, her siblings Cliff Bruce and wife Florence, Viola Warriner and her husband Vernon, Robert Bruce, Ken Bruce and her daughter, Janet Larsen and sons-in-law Sam Pendleton and Evert (Jr.) Larsen.
