In the early days of WWII he taught Radio Code to Navy and Army preflight cadets at Coe College until the military draft pulled him into service. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served for 16 months. He graduated from Coe College in 1947 and the University of Iowa college of Medicine in 1951 and he completed a residency in Anesthesia at the University of Iowa College of Medicine. He served again as a Medical Officer in the Navy from August 1952 through August of 1954 in the Korean conflict. He practiced Anesthesia in Cedar Rapids.
Married Louise F. Fernow on June 16, 1951 at the First Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids.
