AUBURN — Richard Cahill, 85, of Auburn passed away Saturday, Jan. 14, at his home.

He was born March 31, 1931, a son of the late Andrew and Mabel (Mitchell) Cahill. He graduated from Morse High School in 1948 where he played football and hockey.

Later on in life he was a runner, participating in races from 5ks to marathons, often winning in his age group. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and was selected for advance training and schooling at Fort Bliss in El Paso, Texas. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono, where he studied town and city management and from the University of Pittsburgh in 1961, with a master's degree in the urban and regional development concentration. Later on, he completed a summer course at MIT in Boston in city and regional planning.

Richard's career accomplishments included serving as a municipal manager, city planning and community development director, and as a consultant for the former Maine Department of Economic Development. In 1969, he taught government and political science courses for the University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn College.

He founded and served as president of the Maine Association of Planners and served as president of the Maine Chapter of the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment. He was listed in Marquis Who's Who in America in 1976 and subsequent editions and was listed in Who's Who in Government in 1977.

Richard is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Vivian Cahill of Auburn; his three daughters and their husbands, Tammy and Ed, Penny and Tim and Karen and Ryan. He also leaves behind his sister, Margaret Herrin of Bangor; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his two brothers.
