Second Son Of Family Gives Life In Action
"For the second time in this war tragic news from the Philippines has come to Mr. and Mrs. Orville Gillett of Phelps Street, Port Dickinson.
All four of their sons have served in the Philippines. Now the parents have learned that the second one has given his life there.
A War Department message late yesterday told them the Tech. Fourth Grade, Carl W. Gillett, 25, was killed in action December 28 in the Philippines.
Three years and 20 days before - on December 8, 1941 - another son was killed in action in Manila. He was PFC Orin H. Gillett, 20, the fourth fighting man in the Triple Cities area to give his life in the war.
Another brother PDT Bernard N. Gillett, now is serving in the Philippines as a mechanic with the Army Air Corp. The fourth brother, Seaman First Class LaVerne Gillett, is home on leave after completing 21 month duty with the Navy in the Philippines area.
Carl, the latest casualty, entered the Army in February 1942 - only a few days after the family had learned that Orin had been killed.
A graduate of New Milford Pennsylvania High School, Carl received military training at Camp Forrest, Tenn., and Camp Edwards, Mass., and was sent overseas in January 1943."
