Born to Charles Smith and Grace Sawyer. Baptized at Abingdon Parish Church, Gloucester Co VA. Named in church records, Justephenica. Apparently named after his uncle, Justephenikah Sawyer, also baptized in Abingdon Parish Church.
Grandson of William Sawyer and Mary Abbott Sawyer and great-grandson of Christopher Abbott who immigrated in 1635 to Gloucester Co.
He was Lt. Justephenica Smith in the Colonial Militia of Orange Co. Shortly after, he began going by the name Stephen I. K. Smith. During the Revolutionary War, he contributed beef to the militia.
