Bernard was born in June 1925 in Santa Monica, Calif., the third of six children born to Julius and Teresa Vessa. He graduated from St. Monica's in 1943.
Upon graduation he entered the U.S. Navy Aviation Cadet Program at USC. He served in the Navy as an aviation ordinance man 3rd class in a carrier aircraft service unit at NAS Fallon, Nev.
Following the war, he married Nanette Feenan of Philadelphia, Pa. They were married for 61 years. Bernard worked for General Telephone Company for 31 years, beginning as a draftsman and thereafter becoming a project engineer. Upon moving to the Central Coast, he worked as a construction representative for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for 15 years at Vandenberg AFB.
A devoted husband and father he enjoyed spending time with his family and working to spread the Catholic Faith.
He is survived by five of their seven children Nanette, of Upland, Calif.; Phillip, of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; Scott, of Santa Margarita; Monica, of Atascadero; Bernard, of Templeton; and sons and daughters-in-law. He was also survived by four grandchildren, Heather, Stacy, Jaimie and Scott; four great-grandchildren Spencer, Corey, Logan and Abigail.
He is preceded in death by his two children Valerie and Steven.
A visitation will be held 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 17, 2007, at Kuehl-Nicolay Funeral Home, Paso Robles. A rosary will follow at 6 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007, at the Santa Margarita de Cortona Catholic Church in Santa Margarita.
