Born and raised in McPherson KS and a graduate of McPherson High School. He was baptized into the Christian faith and instructed therein, at the First Methodist Church of McPherson. He played baseball on the V-F-W team as a pitcher and in the Babe Ruth baseball league. He played some football in High School.

From 1972-1978 he served in the US Navy / USN-R and was on active duty from 1972-1974 as a machinist during the Viet Nam Era. He was Honorably Discharged in August of 1978, having served aboard the USS La Salle and the USS Hancock. He had been trained as a naval fireman in Bahrain and awarded the National Defense Service Medal. From 1975-1978 he was a member of the McPherson City Fire Department of McPherson KS where his duties were firefighter, pump operator, emergency medical technician and driver of all equipment. From 1977-1984 he operated Mac's Chimney Sweeps, Inc. as co-owner with his father Charles and held the office of Sec-Treasurer. He graduated from Hutchinson Community Junior College in 1978. He worked as inventory control clerk for American Maplan Inc. of McPherson in 1980. From 1982-84 he worked at Sterling Drug McPherson as a Pharmaceutical Attendant. 1984-85: Village Inn Restaurant in Omaha NE as Host and Supv. Asst. Manager. 1986-88: served in the McPherson Police Department as Merchant Police Patrol Officer. 1988-90: Owner-Operator and President of Chimney Sweeping Larry Inc. of McPherson. 1991-1993: St. Francis Regional Medical Center of Wichita as Sterilization decontamination specialist for surgical cart cases. 1995-2000 The Wichita Eagle Newspaper in Wichita as Security officer. 2001: Intrust Bank Wichita as ATM-Tech/Security Officer. 2002 -2005: Andover school District, Andover KS as Lead Custodian. He had served on the McPherson Opera House Restoration Board. He was a member of The American Legion Post 24 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2715.

He lived out the days of his retirement in McPherson near his friends and family. He was a lifelong supporter of the McPherson High school sports teams and of KU basketball. Larry enjoyed fishing, woodworking, being Larry the Clown and Scootin Larry during the annual McPherson County May Day Parade, traveling to more then 23 foreign countries and spending time with his friends and family. He was a great help to his aged mother and in spite of his declining health, did his best to care for her.
