She received her education in NYC public schools and Gloucester County Training School. After high school, she trained as a nursing assistant with the City of NY Department of Hospitals in Bronx, New York. She retired from City Hospital after 35 years of employment as a Pediatric Tech.
Gloria was married to the late Howard Hawkins for 47 years. From this union two daughters were born, Brenda Wright (deceased), and Gloria Jean Hicks (deceased). When her husband retired, they moved to Newberry, SC. Gloria took an active part in her community and accepted a position in the State Department of Health for Health Care Workers, assisted in Food Banks, and Voter Registration.
Gloria moved to Gloucester, VA in 2011 where her sisters resided, and joined the historical Zion Popular Baptist Church. Other than her parents, husband and daughters, Gloria was predeceased by five siblings, and two grandchildren, Chaten Alson and Gloria Esquine.
She leaves in God’s care two sisters, Lelia Johnson of Zion, IL and Margaret Morris of Newport News, VA and one brother Washington Ross of Augusta, GA; two grandchildren: Bernie Wright (Elizabeth), and Siliva Tramel; eight great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Gloria Hawkins will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday May 9, 2020 at Carter Funeral Home, Denbigh Chapel, 251 Richneck Road, Newport News VA,
