William Brooks Cameron- Rockport, Tx

William Brooks Cameron, 91, passed away after a brief illness on June 6, 2020, surrounded by his wife and family. He was born on December 25, 1928 in Knoxville, Tn. He grew up in Sweetwater, Tn and graduated from Tennessee Military Institute in 1947. He then attended Tulane University for pre-med and then graduated from the University of Tennessee, College of Medicine with an MD in December, 1952. He did a rotating internship at the, then, John Gaston Hospital in OB/GYN in Memphis, Tn. He joined the United States Air Force during his internship and spent two years in active duty as a medical officer at Chitose Air Force Base, Hokkaido, Japan. He was honorably discharged after attaining the rank of Captain, USAF. Upon his discharge, he returned to Memphis and did a three year residency at the University of TN Memphis from 1956 to 1959. He also received a Master of Science Degree in OB/GYN from the University of Tennessee Memphis in 1959. He opened an OB/GYN practice in Huntsville, Al and was joined by Dr. Joyce Smith in his practice. He later opened The Clinic for Women in partnership with Dr. Charles Warren and Dr. James Wells. Later, he practiced solo Gynecology until 1996 at which time he sustained a back injury which required him to retire. During the last few years of his solo practice, he also became a gentleman rancher on his beautiful farm in Brownsboro, Al and had a small cattle operation in which he raised grass fed beef using intensive grazing methods well before grass fed beef became popular. Two years after his retirement, he and his wife moved to Hawaii. They went out there initially for a ten day vacation and stayed seven years in Maui. Subsequently, they moved to Rockport, Texas where he resided at the time of his passing. He was an avid reader with an inquisitive mind and he never stopped learning his entire life. He read deeply and broadly on a variety of subjects including, but not limited to, astronomy, quantum physics, string theory, and history. He was an adventurer who loved to go places and in his younder days, he piloted his own Beechcraft Twin Bonanza to Mexico, St. Martin, and numerous other places. He loved animals, and had a special relationship with all his dogs, cattle, and horses over the years.

He was preceded in death by his father, Dr. William Joseph Cameron; mother, Elsie Cleo Brooks Cameron; and son, Mark Richmon Cameron.

He is survived by his beautiful wife, Linda S. Cameron; and his four children, Scott Lane Cameron (Sally Evans), Linda Brooks Cameron (Glen Gilmor), Brad Scobey Cameron (Donna Cameron), and Saleta Jane Cameron. He is also survived by his step-daughter Candace Plank (David Plank) along with ten grandchildren. He also leaves behind his beloved dogs, Cocoa and Cricket, who kept a faithful watch over him.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date in Huntsville, Al. due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
