John Baptise LaBossiere's parents were Alexandre LaBossiere and Juliette Savoie of Manitiba, Canada. John was a graduate of the University of New Brunswick and taught at the Bonar Law High School in Rexton, Kent County, New Brunswick. He married Ferne Hazel Fearon on the 27 June, 1964, in Bass River, Kent County. Ferne was born in 1937 in Tide Head, Restigouche County. John was leader of the New Brunswick New Democratic Party from 1976 to 1980. He was the party's first francophone leader, and an early advocate of environmentalism, building his campaign on opposition to aerial spraying and to the proposed Point Lepreau Nuclear Generating Station.
