Our little mother passed away September 12, 2007, with the same grace that she lived her life. While suffering the indignities of the disease PSP she showed all of us how to endure to the end; never complaining but expressing gratitude for the smallest favor. She very much appreciated her grandchildren's help the past few weeks with her therapy. Never the one to seek the limelight or force her will, she was content to stand a step behind and be a solid support to her husband, family and friends. She was happiest doing all the things that made our house a home.Afton "D" King Hales was born February 12, 1933, to Melford and Della Lyman King in Teasdale, Utah. She grew up in Payson, Utah, where she graduated from high school engaged to her sailor. She married Don Barnett Hales August 17, 1951, in the Salt Lake Temple. After living in Albuquerque, NM; Livermore, CA; and Las Vegas NV, the family settled in Salt Lake City near the University of Utah. She was an active member of the LDS Church serving in many callings including Primary, Young Women and Relief Society President and twice as "Mother of the Ward" when Don was Bishop of the 33rd Ward. She also enjoyed serving in the Salt Lake Temple. She is survived by six children, Cathyren (Larry) Gelwix, Kyle (Kellie) Hales, Bart (Konni) Hales, Annette (Charles) Webb, Valerie (Michael) Christensen, YaVonne (Scott) Liljenquist; 27 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren with four more "on the way"; sisters, Ruth Ann (Ernest) Wilkins, and Jane (Brent) Ludlow; brothers, Melford Arl (Joy) King, and Terrill (Mary Lee) King; and sisters-in-law, JoAnn (Richard) Ellsworth, and Bliss King. She was preceded in death by her husband; grandson, Quintann Hales; parents; and four brothers.

Services will be held Tuesday, September 18th, 11:00 a.m. at the Valley View 4th Ward, 2125 Evergreen Ave, SLC. Viewings will be held Monday evening 6-8 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 East 1300 South, and Tuesday 9:45-10:45 a.m. at the chapel.
