Courtney Ann Rachel Spence was born in Illinois in 1839. Her parents were Williamson Spence and Mary Darnell. When she was 18, she married her first cousin, John M. Darnall. They had a daughter, Almira in 1859 and a son, William in 1861. John enlisted in the 129th Illinois Infantry the next year. He died of illness during the Civil War in Kentucky. After the war, Rachel married Elhanan Fitzgerald and she had four more children. She passed away in Fairbury, IL on 27 Jun 1920 at the age of 80.
