Gaynell Highsmith Sasser, 73, of Nahunta, GA died Thursday afternoon (Sept. 13, 2007) at Southeast Georgia Health System, Brunswick, following a lengthy illness.

Born in Brantley Co., GA in her Grandparents home, Joseph Madison and Julia Thrift Herrin. Daughter of Henry Turner and Isabelle Herrin Highsmith. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Arthur Lafayette Keene, Sr. and Kenneth F. Sasser, 2 sisters, Dawshene Mathie and Naomi Morgan; and a infant son, Alton William Keene.

She was a Nurse and had worked at the Charlton Memorial Hospital, Folkston, GA. A member of Nahunta First Baptist Church where she had served as Sunday School Secretary, A member of Brantley County Historical and Preservation Society, Huxford Genealogical Society, Homerville, GA; Georgia Historical Society, Savannah, GA, National Society of the Daughters of the Revolution, Brunswick Chapter, Brunswick, GA and United Daughters of the Confederacy, Lawton Gordon Evans Brigade, Chapter #2637.

Gaynell is survived by 2 daughters, Annelle Isabelle Keene of Nahunta, GA and Angela Frances Hicks and husband, Lawrence Michael Hicks of Atkinson, GA; and a Son, Arthur (Art) L. Keen, Jr. of Nahunta, GA; 6 Grandchildren, Tabbitha & Gary Edholm, Trey & Amanda Keene , Christy and Benjamin Aaron Townsend, Lawrence Wayne Hicks, Lynn Nicole Hicks and Elizabeth Louise Hicks and 4 Great Grandchildren, Allen and Sierra Edholm, Jesalyn Keene and Elora Ruth Hicks; a sister, Mae Ila Todd of Waycross, GA and a special Friend, Jerry Herrin; 3 Step-children, K.F. Sasser, Jr., Barbara Sue Kaylor and Lawanna Jean Knezevich; 10 Step-grandchildren and 9 Step-Great Grandchildren; several Nieces, Nephews and other relatives and a host of Friends.

Visitation will be Saturday evening starting at 6 p.m. at Chambless-Frye Funeral Home, Nahunta.

Funeral services will be Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at Nahunta First Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Carson and Bishop Hugh Arnold officiating. Burial will follow in Knox Cemetery, Lulaton.

Pallbearers will be Nephews.

Honorary pallbearers will be High School Classmates.

In lieu of Flowers, donations can be made to Nahunta First Baptist Church or United Daughter of the Confederacy, Lawton Gordon Evans Brigade, Chapter #2637.
