Dr. Jack Boyle Fowler passed quietly and gently into the arms of Christ on the evening of Friday, October 4, 2013, at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center, Jackson, Mississippi, following a brief illness. He was surrounded and embraced by the family that he loved, confident that he now rests with God.
Visitation for Dr. Fowler will be held on Tuesday, October 8, 2013 at 2:30 PM in the Guild Parlor at Fowler Hall. A Requiem Eucharist will celebrated at 4:00 PM at St. James Episcopal Church in Jackson, Mississippi.
Dr. Fowler was born in Jackson, Mississippi, to Judge William Fowler and Dorothy Gregory Fowler. He was a graduate of Central High School, class of 1940. After graduating from high school Dr. Fowler attended Hinds Junior College, Loyola University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, where he received his degree in dentistry in 1946. During his time in New Orleans, Dr. Fowler also worked as a welder in the shipyards there alongside his oldest brother "Billy". After earning his dental degree he entered the United States Navy with the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and was stationed aboard the USS Albemarle out of Norfolk, Virginia where he served as the ship's dentist. Dr. Fowler was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1948 but continued to serve for another fifteen years in the Navy Reserve, achieving the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Upon his return to Jackson, Mississippi, Dr. Fowler joined in the practice of dentistry with his father. He married Margaret Megginson in 1949, going on to celebrate a union of more than 64 years. Upon his father's death, Dr. Fowler continued the practice in partnership with his brothers Charles T. Fowler and Gibbs J. Fowler. He practiced dentistry for fifty-five years, retiring at the age of seventy-eight with the respect and admiration of many friends and former patients.
Dr. Fowler was an active communicant at St. James Episcopal Church for most of his life. A founding member of the church, he served multiple terms on the vestry, was a licensed lay reader, chalice bearer, and member of the choir. He also served as the Scoutmaster for Troop Nine also associated with the church and which thrived under his leadership. He was a positive influence on many young scouts. Outside of the church, Dr. Fowler was a devoted family man committing a great deal of time to his sons with whom he especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. With his wife Margaret they were regulars at Colonial Country Club where they greatly enjoyed the game of golf—so much so that the two of them traveled the world over playing courses far and wide. They were instrumental in the formation of the Cursillo movement in the Jackson area and touched the lives of many in doing so. Additionally, Dr. Fowler was very active in barbershop quartet singing. He served on the Board of Trustees at Hinds Community College and was Hinds' Alumnus of the Year in 1976. Dr. Fowler made numerous mission trips to Honduras to provide care and aid to hundreds of people.
Dr. Fowler was preceded in death by his parents Judge William Fowler, Dorothy Gregory Fowler and step mother Ann Bernard Fowler, son Jack Boyle Fowler Jr. and brothers Judge William Fowler Jr., Charles Thomas Fowler, and Gibbs Johnson Fowler.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years Margaret M. Fowler, sons James W. Fowler (Helen) Madison, MS, Gray M. Fowler (Barbara) Madison, MS, Charles T. Fowler II (Lynn), Ocean Springs, MS; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; twin sister Dorothy Nunlist, Huntsville, AL, and brother Frank Gregory Fowler (Carmen), New Orleans, LA.
It can certainly be said of Jack that he lived well and worked hard to give his children a better life than he had growing up. Through his kindness and generosity he relieved the pain and suffering of thousands of people at home and abroad. We miss him dearly.
