Melvin Curtis Haines son of Giles Wilbur and Emma Jane Haines was born on June 10, 1867 at Schenectady, New York and departed this life at the Swallum Hospital, Storm Lake Iowa on July 24, 1950 at the age of 83 years, one month, and 14 days. At the age of three he moved with his parents to Newell, Iowa and has lived in this vicinity since that time. He received his education in the Newell School. On May 30, 1896 he was united in marriage to Viola J. Conklin. To this union three children were born, two having passed away in early infancy. He united with the first Congregational Church of Newell having been custodian of this church for a number of years. He was also a member of the Knights of Pythias. He leaves to mourn his loss, one son Alvey of Des Moines, Iowa, one brother, Marion W. Haines of Newell, Iowa and many old friends. His father, mother, wife and two small children preceded him in death. In the passing of Melvin Haines this town has lost one of its very earliest settlers.
