Obituary (published in the Missoulian 7/1/1018)
MISSOULA — JoAnne Simmons Peterson peacefully passed away on Wednesday, April 25, surrounded by love at the family home after a short battle with brain cancer.

She was born on July 6, 1949, in Missoula to Robert and Ethel Simmons and was later adopted by Lora Jean Simmons, Robert's second wife, after both of her biological parents had died. JoAnne attended Washington Grade School and graduated from Sentinel High School in 1967. She was always passionate about helping others and did so while working for the Missoula County Welfare Department after graduation. On April 8, 1972, she married Jon M. Peterson in Missoula, where they continued to reside during their married life. She chose to remain home for 13 years to raise their two daughters, Betty and Emily. When later returning to work outside the home, she devoted 25 years to Wagner's Home Furnishings.

JoAnne and Jon spent many years as active members of local square dancing clubs where they had originally met. They enjoyed camping with close friends, attending Griz sporting events (especially Lady Griz basketball games), enjoying stage plays and being long-time members of the First Presbyterian Church. During their life together, JoAnne and Jon traveled throughout the U.S., Canada and abroad. She had very fond memories of one of their last trips, traveling to the Netherlands and Uganda where they went on a safari and cruised on the Nile River.

Survivors include her husband, Jon, Missoula; two daughters and their families — Betty Brennan, New Jersey and her children Mackenzie and Connor, and Emily Thornton, Uganda, her husband, George, and their children, Hailey and Christopher; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends. Her memory will live on in our hearts forever.

There will be a graveside service on July 7 for family and friends at 1 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Cemetery, followed by a celebration of life from 2-4 p.m. in the Sunset Community Center. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Camp Mak-A-Dream, the St. Jude Children Research Hospital or any local cancer organization.
