Harriet I. Anderson, 83, of Stowe Avenue, Riverside, a homemaker and longtime volunteer, died Monday at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

She was the wife of the late Henry M. Anderson. Born in Pawtucket, a daughter of the late Robert L. and Rose (Field) Richardson-Hathaway, she was a lifelong resident of the Riverside section of East Providence.

Mrs. Anderson had been a volunteer for 28 years at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, in Davis Park, Providence, and a member of the Veterans Administration Volunteer Services.

She was a past commodore of the Rhode Island Disabled American Veterans, and a member of the American Veterans Association, the Rhode Island Gold Star Mothers Association, and the American Legion, Riverside Post 10, Women's Auxiliary.

Mrs. Anderson was a communicant of St. Brendan Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.

She leaves a daughter, Carol Ann Carbone, and a son, Carl E. Anderson, both of East Providence; a stepson, Henry Anderson, of New Hampshire; two sisters, Myrtle St. Martin and Alice Shilo, both of Riverside; two brothers, George Hathaway, of Riverside, and James Richardson, of East Providence; and five stepgrandchildren. She was a sister of the late Rose LaForge and William and Robert Richardson.

The funeral will be held Friday at 7:45 a.m. from the W. Raymond Watson Funeral Home, 350 Willett Ave., with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9 in St. Brendan Church, Turner Avenue. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
