Mary E. Newark, 84, Grand Forks, died Friday, Dec. 14, 2001, in Altru Hospital, Grand Forks.

Mary Elizabeth Armes was born Oct. 10, 1917, the daughter of Milton "Dick" and Rose (Kolars) Armes, in Larimore, N.D., where she grew up and graduated from high school. She graduated from the New York Hairdressing Academy, Fargo, in 1943 and worked for the Club Beauty Shop, Grand Forks, as a beautician. She married James H. Magoris in 1935. He died on March 9, 1945, during World War II. She married Sylvester Ves Newark on May 1, 1946. He died July 1, 1970.

She is survived by a daughter, Rae Ann McGurran, Grand Forks; a son, Robert (Patti), Grand Forks; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Faye Wengel, Marcia Jaffray and Margaret Englund.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks.

Visitation: 2 to 4 p.m. today, with a 4 p.m. prayer service, and a 1:30 p.m. rosary service, Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, South Washington Street, Grand Forks, and one hour before services in the church.

Burial: Bellevue Cemtery, Larimore.
