He was the youngest of nine children of Bohemian (Czech) immigrants. He enlisted in the US Navy in September 1940 at Minnespolis, Minnesota, and served through World War II. He married Evelyn Thompson in Los Angeles County, California, in 1942. He was an engineer for IBM before his retirement.
