Jim D. "JR" Rogers
August 22, 1943 - April 7, 2011
The Rogers family lost its rock, and the town of Golden, the Colorado music community, and the world lost a giant on Thursday, April 7, 2011, when Jim D. "JR" Rogers passed away. JR had a huge heart--literally and figuratively--and it gave out in the early morning hours of April 7. JR is survived by his beloved wife Jackie, son Brent and his wife Khristine, all of Golden, CO; Jackie's daughter Michelle Strohfus, her husband Dave, and "Grandpa JR's" two best buddies, Brenden and Kieran Strohfus, of Castle Rock, CO; Jackie's son Justin Kowal and his wife Mary of New York City; his dear mother Maxine Rogers of Boulder, CO; his brother Keith Dale Rogers of Golden, CO; brother Eugene Rogers of Coon Rapids, MN; sister Jeane Rogers and her life partner Jane Yant of Lafayette, CO; brother Ben and his wife Karen of Smithville, MO; sister Linda Vanderpoel and her husband Ken of Smyrna, GA; also eight nephews: Michael Rogers, Scott Rogers, Erik Rogers, Brent Rogers, David Blair, Ben Blair, Nathan Esch, and Matthew Esch; four nieces: LaNette Dohrer, Sherri Underhill (and her daughter Alondra), Kimberly Rogers, and Cherie Esch; one aunt, Mary Rogers of Kansas City, MO; and countless cousins and loved ones near and far. JR was preceded in death by his father, Everett Keith Rogers. Jimmie Dwayne Rogers was born August 22, 1943, in Mercer, MO, to Dollie Maxine and Everett Keith Rogers, a Pentecostal preacher. JR's lifelong love of music began in his early teens playing traditional hymns and gospel music on the piano in his father's small, country churches in Southern Iowa. He graduated in 1961 from Ottumwa High School. He began an early career in radio selling advertising in and around Ottumwa before moving behind the microphone to read news, weather and sports. This led to a brief stint as a TV weatherman on a local Ottumwa station. He later moved his family to the Quad Cities (Davenport and Bettendorf, IA) where he worked nights as a country DJ and emcee of local country music shows. By day, he worked as a tool and dye designer in several small engineering firms and machine shops that catered to the farm implement industry in Eastern Iowa and Western Illinois. In 1976, he migrated to his beloved Colorado (many Rogers family members would later follow), where he took a job in the drafting and design department at Coors. He later stepped out from behind the drawing board and became a skilled electrician and maintenance technician for Coors, thus honing his incredible "he can fix anything" talents that so many friends and family relied on throughout his life. While working full time, he earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Denver University. At age 42, he entered law school at the University of Colorado in Boulder and earned his Juris Doctorate degree in 1988. While in law school, he interned with the Boulder Public Defender's Office. JR found his true professional calling and passion as a solo law practitioner, devoting endless hours and energy to defending the rights of those with limited resources. Until the day of his death, he was a tireless and tenacious advocate for his clients and the causes of social justice and equality, and he helped so many through his small, one-man law practice. He relished the David vs. Goliath-type battles, and his professional creed was "They might outspend me, but they'll never out work me." JR was equally well known for the "Sunday Jam Sessions" he and Jackie hosted at their home for many years. It was an all-day, wide-open, potluck and music jam, where all were welcome, and family, friends and musicians, amateur and professional alike, came together to make terrific music and friendships. JR was a great host and "connector," and many of the friendships and musical affiliations formed at his jam sessions live on to this day in his honor. JR truly lived his values of compassion, self-sacrifice, and service to others--all day, every day--regardless of the cost, financial and otherwise, to himself. His door was always open and there was no call for help he wouldn't answer, day or night. He will be greatly missed, but continually honored, by the many friends, clients and family members whose lives he touched and so greatly enriched. A public viewing will be held for JR from 4:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 12th, at Foothills Chapel, 1950 Ford Street, Golden, Colorado 80401. The Funeral Service will follow on Wednesday, April 13th, at 2:00 p.m. in The Great Hall at Calvary Church at 14th and Arapahoe Streets in Golden. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Jim's name at Wells Fargo Bank 1301 Jackson St. Golden, CO 80401.
