Son of John Anderson Wilson and Nancy Ann Holiman. He was an ordained minister of the Freewill Baptist Church.

He obtained his nickname due to being struck in the eye by a thorn bush limb while riding in an open wagon. The thorn pierced his eye causing him to lose vision in that eye.
