Henry Bird's eldest son Vardeman M Bird was born in Tennessee (presumably Morgan County) ~ 1829. Per Henry Sr's 1850 census, each of the other children born to Henry and his 1st wife--William E, Ambrose and Mary "Polly" Bird--were born in Indiana between 1833 & 1836 (probably Brown County where they were censued in 1850).
On 1 Jan 1839, Henry Bird of Brown County, Indiana married as his second wife, Matilda Cobb, the daughter of Ambrose Cobb (1774 - 1863) and his wife Mary Jane "Polly" Alcorn (1785 - 1850). With Matilda, Henry Bird had five more children, all born at Brown County, Indiana. These children were Hannah, Henry Bird Jr, Matilda, Ralph H Bird and Emmoline.
Henry's second wife died in 1858. That same year, two of Henry's daughters married (perhaps in anticipation of the family's move to Missouri). Matilda Cobb's eldest daughter Hannah married John FitzGerald at Nashville (Brown County), Indiana on 3 Jul 1858. The couple remained in Brown County until Hannah's death before 1880. On 13 Nov 1858, Henry's youngest child with his first wife, Mary Bird, married Thomas Hobbs. This couple also remained in Brown County (Van Buren, IN) until Mary's death, 11 Apr 1900. Henry Sr's eldest son Vardeman M Bird married three times and remained in Brown County Indiana (Van Buren) all his life; dying between 4 Jun 1891 and 1897.
Yet by 1860, Henry Bird Sr and his three surviving youngest children (Henry Jr, Ralph Bird and Emmoline) were censused over 550 miles SW of Brown County, Indiana, at Finley, Webster County, Missouri, living with Elizabeth (Cobb) Mahan, the niece of the Sr Henry's deceased 2nd wife. Henry Sr's brother-in-law Ambrose Cobb (his niece Elizabeth's father) was listed immediately below Henry on the 1860 census.
It would appear that neither Henry Bird Sr, nor his son Ralph, or daughter Emmoline survived the Civil War. Henry Sr's son Ambrose and daughter Matilda were missing from the 1860 census. However, by 10 Jan 1861--just 6 months after the 1860 census in Missouri--not only had Henry Sr's son Henry Bird Jr moved ~350 miles back NE, to Lewistown, Fulton County, Illinois, but on that day at Fulton County, IL, Henry Bird Jr married Mary Ann Matney.
Then the Civil War broke out and on 11 Aug 1862, Henry Bird Jr of Lewistown, Fulton County, IL (listed as born at Brown County, IN) joined Company H of the Union's 103rd Illnois Infantry. He appears to have listed his DOB as 1841, rather than 1844; enlisting as a 21 year old rather than age 18.
Just two days before, Henry's elder half brother William Bird, also of Lewistown, Illinois, had enlisted in Company A of the 103rd Illinois Infantry . This William E Bird was mustered out on 21 Jun 1865 with the rank of Sergeant, but does not appear to have been censused in 1870. In April 1864, just before the Union's Atlanta Campaign commenced on 3 May 1864, Henry Bird Jr was discharged at Scottsburg (sic Scottsboro), Alabama (a Union Civil War Encampment from 26 Dec 1863 - 1 May 1864).
By 1870, Henry Bird Jr had returned to Fulton County, IL (Liverpool) where he & his family were censused through 1900. His wife died ~1899, so in 1900, Henry was living with his 2nd daughter, Mary Etta Bird Murphy & her family. Mary Etta's husband died in 1901 and she remarried to Samuel Amos Munson. She & Munson had a son Russell Clayton Munson (Sr) b 12 Aug 1904 in Illinois. By 1910, Henry Bird Jr (never one to shy away from a cross county move) had moved with this daughter and her second husband (Samuel Amos Munson) over 900 miles to Security, Texas, located north of Houston, between Cleveland and Conroe (and less than 10 miles from Cut and Shoot). Here, Henry Bird Jr was laid to rest 26 Mar 1917; age 72. He was his family's longest surviving member.
