Prinzessin Elisabeth von Bayern was the daughter of Prinz Leopold von Bayern and his wife, Archduchess Gisela of Austria. She was a niece of Ludwig III, the last king of Bavaria, and a granddaughter of Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I and Empress Elisabeth of Austria. She was married on November 2, 1893, at Genoa, Italy, to Otto Ludwig Philipp von Seefried auf Buttenheim, Freiherr zu Hagenbach. The couple eloped and married secretly, as the groom was of much lower rank than Elisabeth and he was a Protestant. Although the marriage was met with disapproval by some family members, it was accepted by both the mother of the bride and her maternal grandfather, the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph who presented them with a palace near Vienna. Otto was appointed a lieutenant of the 1st Regiment of Infantry at Troppau and the Emperor raised him to the rank of Count (German: Graf) in 1904.
