Burchette returned Saturday night from Puyallup, where on Friday afternoon at the Masonic home, he attended the funeral of his uncle, R. G. Newland, who died at the home at the age of 100 years and 50 days. Mr. Newland had been an inmate of the home for the last eight years. He was one of the early members of the territorial legislature, being elected to that position in 1874 and again in 1876, when he was a resident of Eastern Washington. In 1876, he was speaker of the house. Mr. Newland drove across the plains and settled in Dayton, Wash., in 1861, taking up a large tract of land, which he converted into a wheat ranch. Later he removed to the Big Bend country and after that to California.
